The fifth annual Vaughn College Gala was held on Thursday, November 8 in the William R. DeCota Hangar on the College’s main campus. Mary Ellen S. Jones, vice president of Asia-Pacific Sales at Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines was the honoree. The Gala is an opportunity for professionals in the industries the College serves to connect with students, faculty and staff and learn how they can help support the Vaughn community. JetBlue announced the JetBlue Foundation has awarded $135,000 in grants to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education programs in Puerto Rico to aid in long-term post-hurricane recovery. Grants of varying amounts were provided to organizations that are investing in the island’s future and placing aviation and STEM top-of-mind as career choices for students. Earlier this spring, the JetBlue Foundation opened a granting application cycle to qualified programs and organizations working to fuel STEM learning. The latest 747-400ERF joins the airline’s fleet on an operating lease and will initially be used to meet customer demand on CLA’s U.S. routes. On Dec.10, 2018 the Amityville Memorial High School Library will be re-named in honor of Dr. Nancy Leftenant-Colon. Amityville Memorial High School is a public high school located in Amityville, NY, on the south shore of Long Island. Amityville Memorial High School was founded in 1894, and Dr. Nancy, along with her brother and sisters, attended Amityville High School in the 1930s. U.S. airlines are proud to be one of the American industries contributing to the positive job numbers released by the U.S. Department of Labor today. Currently, U.S. passenger and cargo airlines employ 720,000 men and women, 2.9 percent more than a year ago. U.S. airlines currently employ the highest number of workers since 2000. Additionally, the U.S. airline industry is sharply outpacing the rest of the economy in wage growth. UPS announced that George Brooks has been appointed president for the Americas Region. Brooks takes over Romaine Seguin’s role, who has accepted a global assignment at UPS Corporate headquarters. George will be responsible for all UPS package and cargo operations in Canada and more than 50 countries and territories, as well as the UPS Supply Chain Solutions operations throughout Latin America, Miami and the Caribbean. She will oversee air, ocean, and rail freight forwarding as well as brokerage and supplier management for the 220 countries and territories UPS serves around the world. JetBlue today revealed its latest special livery dedicated to the Brooklyn Nets. “BK Blue” joins JetBlue’s legion of New York-themed aircraft. JetBlue was named the Official Domestic Airline of Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets in 2013 and has renewed its partnership for another five-year term. “BK Blue” was designed by a team of Brooklynites and New Yorkers.
