During National Small Business Week, the New Terminal One at JFK (NTO) honors Southeast Queens-based Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) who have helped move the historic redevelopment forward during National Small Business Week, April 30 – May 6. MWBEs have faced unique challenges throughout the pandemic, shown remarkable resilience, and made important contributions to Southeast Queens, New York City, and the region’s economy.

This year, a few outstanding local MWBEs based in Southeast Queens have played a significant role in the terminal’s construction, including:

    • Stacey Hodge, the owner of SBI Strategies Inc, provides transportation planning to improve the traveler experience and to serve our employees and the surrounding communities better.
    • Robert Alleyne, Alleyne Consulting Group, LLC – a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business headed by a former Navy officer who offers his expertise in IT design, cutting-edge technology solutions, innovative designs, and seamless workflow for NTO’s new headquarters.

Cauley Coach Charter Bus Service, a family-owned small business based in Jamaica, Queens, launched the first MWBE-owned fleet of electric buses in New York State, providing zero-emission ground transportation for construction workers and also works in conjunction with workers affiliated with Teamsters Local 282.

MWBE contributions have been vital to the redevelopment efforts of The New Terminal One at JFK, which will offer a 23-gate, state-of-the-art terminal that is sustainably designed and future-focused. The terminal will feature expansive, naturally-lit public spaces, cutting-edge technology, and an array of amenities, all designed to enhance the customer experience and compete with some of the highest-rated airport terminals in the world. With more than 300,000 square feet of dining, retail, lounges, and recreational space, The New Terminal One at JFK will offer passengers a uniquely New York sense of place.

“National Small Business Week is our opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Southeast Queens MWBEs to our city’s and region’s economy,” said Dr. Gerrard P. Bushell, President and CEO of The New Terminal One at JFK. “We are proud to honor these outstanding individuals; their hard work, ingenuity, and dedication have been instrumental in bringing this project to life.”

“The New Terminal One at JFK recognizes local MWBE small businesses for their contributions to this project,” stated Kimberly Hardy, Diversity Manager, The New Terminal One at JFK. “We are committed to providing opportunities and forging stronger partnerships with organizations and the community to help small businesses grow and compete.”

In keeping with the Port Authority’s mandate for a minimum of 30 percent MWBE participation across the entire $19 billion JFK redevelopment as well as a special emphasis on hiring local firms, the New Terminal One has committed to contracting with small businesses, providing jobs to the local community and driving MWBE participation. Project leaders—including Dr. Gerrard P. Bushell, President and CEO of NTO; the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; and NTO’s consortium partners Ferrovial, JLC Infrastructure, Ullico, and Carlyle—have intentionally set diversity and inclusion metrics above industry standards to appropriately reflect the makeup of the New York metropolitan area, especially the local community of Southeast Queens in which the project is located.
