In the wake of Hurricane Irma’s destructive path through the Caribbean, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is supporting storm recovery efforts in the U.S. Virgin Islands with a fully-staffed mobile air traffic control tower at Cyril E. King International Airport in St. Thomas. The tower was fully operational at 9:40 a.m. this morning and is now supporting relief flights by the U.S. military, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, general aviation and limited commercial flights. In honor of Air Canada’s 80th anniversary, Air Canada’s Lockheed 10A vintage aircraft is taking to the skies across Canada. After taking off this morning from Vancouver, BC, the L-10A will be making overnight stops as well as fuel stops at airports across Canada, and will be on public display at the Royal Aviation Museum in Winnipeg on September 13 and 14. As part of the tour, the vintage 10-seat aircraft will overnight in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax. United Airlines announces today a new option for customer to check in and learn flights without the touch of a finger. The new United skill for Amazon Alexa allows customers to use their Alexa-enabled devices, such as the Amazon Echo and the Amazon Echo Dot, to check in and ask a variety of questions about flights. JetBlue, the first U.S. airline to bring affordable and convenient commercial air travel to Cuba after more than 50 years, today announced the long-anticipated opening of its City Ticket Office and Airport Ticket Office in Havana. Both locations offer a new option for Cubans to book travel on JetBlue, with the added benefit of in-person interactions which will provide the personal, helpful and simple customer experience the airline is known for. For 25 years, frequent departures, easy check-in and boarding and helpful business services have been hallmarks of the Delta Shuttle, which made its debut on Sept. 1, 1991, following the airline’s acquisition of Pan Am’s shuttle service. The business-oriented product, which initially offered hourly service to Boston and Washington, D.C., from New York-LGA, has been a core part of Delta’s New York operation ever since, carrying more than 16 million passengers. Southwest Airlines Co. extended its legacy of aircraft innovation this week by taking delivery of the airline’s first Boeing 737 MAX 8. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s airports – the world’s busiest aviation network – are on pace to reach a fifth consecutive annual record for passenger levels, jumping 2.4 percent with nearly 63.6 million travelers in the first half of 2017 compared to the same period last year. Benefitting from last fall’s relaxation of federal hourly flight limits, Newark Liberty International Airport served a record 20.9 million passengers between January and June, representing a robust 7.2-percent spike over the first six months of 2016. Delta Air Lines’ latest innovative test program at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) allows customers to video chat from the airport with a specialist – a first for U.S. airlines. Five interactive digital screens with individual receivers are now featured at the redesigned Delta Sky Assist so customers can connect face-to-face with Delta specialists. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, together with Delta CEO Ed Bastian, today announced the start of construction on Delta’s new facilities at a groundbreaking ceremony at LaGuardia Airport after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey signed a new, long-term lease with Delta. The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction on the final component of the entirely new, unified airport at LaGuardia, which will provide all LaGuardia travelers with state-of-the-art amenities and expanded public transportation, including the planned AirTrain.
