The new, New York City ferry system is wonderful, and the best deal you can get in New York City. These new, sleek, and efficient ferries transport passengers up and down the East River, to view shoreline sights in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx. It is similar to taking the Circle Line, but for short trips and at an amazing cost of $2.75 per trip. If you wanted to compare this type of transportation internationally, the mass transit system in Venice is commuter boat-oriented, well organized, fun and never to be missed. One ferry segment, from Wall Street’s Pier 11, very close to…
This was our fifth visit to Mainz, Germany, the best little city just 25 minutes from the Frankfurt Airport very easy by train – and a perfect one-day trip. Early in my Delta Air Lines career, I asked several flight attendants why the Delta crew hotel was always in Mainz, and not in downtown Frankfurt, and they all responded, “go to Mainz and you will know why.” I did, and cannot disagree. It was a very pleasant surprise. Mainz was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC as a military fortress on the northernmost frontier of the empire and…
It has been remarkable, how many times we have traveled to both Zurich and Switzerland and it is because Zurich and Switzerland are remarkable places. So here is something special that the general tourist to Zurich (and some residents of Zurich) know nothing about. Several times a year during the summer, the temperatures rise over 90 degrees and Zurich residents do something very special and flock to the Werdinsel natural river park. This park is really an island with a divided river on both sides. One side is really for floats and rafts only and the swimming side is unique.…
In many ways, it is comparable to traveling to the islands of Greece, but without actually going to Greece. We found Ibiza to be beautiful and at the same, time, very natural in how the villages fit in with the natural environment. The best time to travel to the island is probably during the summer, when it is very hot and wild, this island is a “steal of a deal” during the pre and post summer times. The weather is hot and the many beaches (80 beaches) on the island are excellent and beautiful. For 10 years in a row we have stayed…
There is nothing like a one or two day shot to Milan and a visit to Lake Como for lunch and a cruise on the lake. When you arrive at Milan’s Malpensa airport you have two choices, either to stay at the beautiful Sheraton airport hotel that is connected to the terminals, or to take the Malpensa express to the downtown and stay at a hotel in the city. We have made this trip both ways and it depends upon how many days you are staying and what you want to see. Lately we have been staying for one overnight and enjoying the…
The first two weeks of December, are notorious for being the slowest two weeks of the year in the travel business. This time period is the aftermath of the Thanksgiving holiday and becomes the buying season, leading up to Christmas. You can almost travel anywhere and name your price. It is this time of the year that I go to Europe to enjoy Europe’s magnificent Christmas markets. This year we began by visiting the five Christmas Markets in Munich Germany. Without a doubt, I visited the two best Christmas markets in Munich. The Christmas market in downtown Munich, on the Marienplatz, was huge…
Cordova, Spain was everything that was promised. The city has many open plazas and green spaces, beautiful parks and what is billed as the largest old town in Europe. As I normally do when traveling to Spain, I flew into Madrid as a central point and then boarded a train for the one-day adventure in this European city. The RENFE, Spanish rail system, has excellent high-speed trains that connect the major cities. Most of these trains travel over 300KPH or 186 miles per hour. The trip from Madrid to Cordova which is approximately 250 miles, was a little under one…
Paris remains one of the best cities in the world to visit. Just being in the city and walking the streets, visiting the museums, enjoying the restaurants, the little shops and stores is always exciting. We decided to do something we rarely do; visit a city in just a single day. Even more rare, do it in the middle of summer. It turned out to be a perfect trip. For some reason, there has been a little wiggle room this summer for non-revenue travel to Europe in general, especially Paris via Charles de Gaulle airport. (CDG) Upon arrival to Paris/CDG,…
This is my first article with Metropolitan Airport News and reflects my love of adventure and traveling. Working for Delta Airlines has given me the opportunity to do extensive traveling, and I would like to share some of my experiences with you. My most recent trip was a visit to a series of volcanic islands in the mid-Atlantic Ocean with the familiar name of the Azores. The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, is an archipelago of nine islands that are characterized by dramatic landscapes, fishing villages, green pastures, and hedgerows of blue hydrangeas. The main city of the Azores…
