Southwest Airlines Co. extended its legacy of aircraft innovation this week by taking delivery of the airline’s first Boeing 737 MAX 8. Southwest is the first airline in the United States to receive the 737 MAX, and the carrier expects to take delivery of eight more MAX aircraft in the coming weeks with the intent to launch nine MAX aircraft into revenue service throughout its network on October 1. “After 46 years of unprecedented success, Southwest Airlines has a lot more to do and a lot more places to go. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s airports – the world’s busiest aviation network – are on pace to reach a fifth consecutive annual record for passenger levels, jumping 2.4 percent with nearly 63.6 million travelers in the first half of 2017 compared to the same period last year. Benefitting from last fall’s relaxation of federal hourly flight limits, Newark Liberty International Airport served a record 20.9 million passengers between January and June, representing a robust 7.2-percent spike over the first six months of 2016. We were joined by supporters of the 2017 Charitable Giving Campaign to present a check for $5,600.00 to the USO. Delta Air Lines’ latest innovative test program at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) allows customers to video chat from the airport with a specialist – a first for U.S. airlines. Five interactive digital screens with individual receivers are now featured at the redesigned Delta Sky Assist so customers can connect face-to-face with Delta specialists. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, together with Delta CEO Ed Bastian, today announced the start of construction on Delta’s new facilities at a groundbreaking ceremony at LaGuardia Airport after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey signed a new, long-term lease with Delta. The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction on the final component of the entirely new, unified airport at LaGuardia, which will provide all LaGuardia travelers with state-of-the-art amenities and expanded public transportation, including the planned AirTrain. They may not be replacing warehouse workers, at least not yet, but robotics are increasingly being introduced in warehouses to help workers pick orders and manage inventory. Logistics providers like DHL Supply Chain, Geodis, and Kenco and retailers like Amazon and Walmart are some of the companies leading the way in this area. JFKIAT, LLC. – the company that operates Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport – recently announced it has entered into an agreement with dnata, one of the world’s largest air-services organizations, to provide ground handling services at the terminal. Beginning August 1st, dnata will coordinate ground handling services for a number of airlines at Terminal 4, including Etihad Airways, Volaris, and Air Serbia, with combined annual turnarounds of more than 2,000 flights. Delta Air Lines is deepening its longstanding and industry-leading partnership with Air France-KLM Group with a €375 million investment to acquire 10 percent equity in the joint venture partner and a seat on the Air France-KLM Group Board of Directors. The Port Authority Board of Commissioners today authorized $54.4 million to rehabilitate Runway 4-22 and associated taxiways at LaGuardia Airport to extend their useful life and ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration standards.
