SWISS and the Lufthansa Group have embarked on a strategic partnership with the Swiss-based Climeworks company. Climeworks has developed an innovative technology to remove carbon dioxide from the air. In teaming up with Climeworks, SWISS is supporting the scaling up of this key technology for the aviation sector. With effect from May 1, 2024, the presently three-member top management body will be expanded with the addition of a Chief Operating Officer. The enlargement is intended to give greater weight to the company’s core activity. Oliver Buchhofer, who is presently Head of Operations, has been appointed to the new COO position. SWISS has also appointed a new Chief Financial Officer. Dennis Weber, who is presently Head of Investor Relations at Lufthansa Group, will assume his new SWISS CFO duties on May 1, 2024. Today, JetBlue announced that it has reached an agreement with Spirit Airlines to terminate their July 2022 merger agreement. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg today announced a new proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that would ensure airline passengers who use wheelchairs can travel safely and with dignity. The proposed rule would require that airlines meet rigorous standards for accommodating passengers with disabilities safely and with dignity. The proposal will set new standards for prompt, safe, and dignified assistance, mandate enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passengers with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs and specify actions that airlines must take to protect passengers when a wheelchair is damaged during transport. New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced Equinor’s Empire Wind 1 project one of the conditional winners in its fourth offshore wind solicitation round. The award is an important milestone for the advancement of the project, which can deliver 810 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to New York. An already highly mature offshore wind project, Empire Wind 1 targets to deliver first power to New York in 2026. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) and JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), the company selected to build and operate John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 6, today marked one year since breaking ground on the $4.2 billion terminal with a sneak peek of the facility through a new animated rendering from terminal frontage to gate. Etihad Cargo has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a member of the SATS Group, for cargo handling services at 12 major international airports in Europe, Scandinavia, North America, India, and Asia Pacific. The global award is for a three-year period and will see WFS handling over 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually for the Abu Dhabi-headquartered airline.
