Federal Express (FedEx), the world’s largest express transportation company, today announced it is providing $2.5 million to create scholarships dedicated to easing the financial burden of rising education costs on the next generation of aviation professionals. FedEx Express created the FedEx Purple Runway Aviation Scholarship program and is collaborating with six universities and technical schools from around the country that provide valuable education and training for aspiring pilots, aircraft maintenance technicians and other aviation professionals. Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport – one of the world’s most active air terminals – hosted its third annual Girls in Aviation Day in partnership with Vaughn College. Terminal 4 held a panel discussion with aviation industry experts from leading companies for the students. UPS announced that it expects to sign-up nearly 40,000 seasonal employees this Friday, in a one-day hiring blitz it’s calling ‘UPS Brown Friday’. The company launched last month plans to hire 100,000 seasonal workers to support its annual holiday shipping rush, and UPS Brown Friday is part of that continuing effort. UPS is holding nearly 170 hiring fairs across the country on Friday, and will be hiring thousands of candidates on the spot. The Homeland Security Department is investing in technology that helps air travelers navigate airport security and gives federal agents a direct line of communication with passengers. The agency’s Science and Technology Directorate awarded a nearly $120,000 contract to LocusLabs to adapt their airport navigation application for Transportation Security Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The smartphone app would give passengers real-time location information and guide them from curb to gate using Google Maps-style directions. Kennedy International Airport – one of the world’s most active air terminals – today announced a partnership with CrowdVision, an industry-leading passenger measurement and analytics solution, to optimize operations, layouts, and processes throughout the terminal. The TWA Hotel’s 1958 Lockheed Constellation “Connie” L-1649A Starliner airplane is completing her 300-mile journey from Auburn-Lewiston Airport in Maine, where she was fully restored, to her new home at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. The Connie (tail number: N8083H) will become a one-of-a-kind cocktail lounge and event space at the 512-room hotel opening in spring 2019 and located at the landmark 1962 former TWA terminal designed by Eero Saarinen. Travelers aid at JFK recently held a luncheon to celebrate Helga Wertheheimer’s 25 years as a Travelers aid volunteer with all her co-workers in attendance. The GM at JFK gave Helga a letter of recognition for her fine work over the years. Travelers Aid is a program at JFK airport and others that services passengers that encounter problems or otherwise seek assistance during travel.
