Nine people were arrested yesterday (January 18) after Transportation Security Administration officers detected a suspicious item in a carry-on bag at a Newark Liberty International Airport checkpoint. The preliminary investigation indicates that all were in collaboration and claimed to be working for a television network. Some members of the group attempted to intentionally carry through the security checkpoint an item in a carry-on bag that had all of the makings of an improvised explosive device. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued an update yesterday on current conditions at JFK Airport. “What happened at JFK was completely unacceptable and we will investigate what went wrong and prevent it from happening again,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. “The primary problem appears to be international airlines arriving without available gates at the international terminals, but we will thoroughly review all aspects of what happened leading up to and during the snowstorm, and the recovery period afterwards. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced it will launch an investigation into the water pipe break that occurred at John F. Kennedy Airport this afternoon. The incident significantly disrupted operations at Terminal 4, a privately run terminal. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) set another screening record during the 2017 holiday travel period, December 15 through January 2, 2018, with more than 42 million (42,043,588) passengers and more than 30.6 million (30,611,408) checked bags screened nationwide. December 22, the Friday before Christmas, was the busiest day with more than 2.5 million passengers and crew members screened.
