United Airlines (UAL) flew – for the final time – a Boeing 747 aircraft, the jumbo jet with the unmistakable silhouette that once represented the state-of-the-art in air travel. Serving as the ultimate throwback, the airline recreated the first 747 flight operated by United in 1970 for today’s historic farewell journey. Flight UA747 departed from San Francisco with service to Honolulu with more than 300 customers, employees and distinguished guests onboard. Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport – one of the world’s most active air terminals – recently welcomed Hainan Airlines to its growing list of international carriers, allowing Terminal 4 to serve more areas of China than ever before. The airline will now offer non-stop service, twice a week, between New York City, Chongqing and Chengdu, China. Today, Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport – the premiere gateway to New York City and the United States – welcomed FAO Schwarz’s first-ever travel retail store to its premium offerings for a limited time. Operated by leading luxury retailer DFS Group, the 300-square-foot pop-up shop brings the brand’s memorable experiences and premium goods to Terminal 4 through December 31, 2017. British all-cargo airline, CargoLogicAir (CLA), is adding Tel Aviv to its growing network of scheduled freighter operations. Starting on 10 November 2017, the London Stansted-based airline will operate a weekly Boeing 747-400F service to Tel Aviv via Frankfurt. The flight will depart Frankfurt for Tel Aviv Friday evening before returning to Frankfurt on Saturday morning. In December, the outbound service ex Europe will switch from Frankfurt to Hahn Airport. On October 16, 1956, Pan American Flight 6, which was a four-engine Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, took off from Honolulu and headed northeast towards San Francisco, at 8:26pm, HST. “PanAm 90943, Flight 6, declaring an emergency over the Pacific” was the message received by the Combat Information Control and then radioed to Coast Guard Radioman Doak Walker, onboard Coast Guard Cutter Pontchartrain, on duty between Hawaii and the California Coast. The Port Authority Board of Commissioners today approved an extension of funding for the Council for Airport Opportunity (CAO), a nonprofit organization that provides airport-related recruitment and job placement services to minority and disadvantaged residents in Queens, New York and Newark, New Jersey. The two-year agreement with CAO will assist local residents living in the vicinity of John F. Kennedy International (JFK), Newark Liberty International (EWR) and LaGuardia (LGA) Airports. On September 23, 2017, 74 Girls in Aviation Day events were held by WAI chapters and corporate members, including 15 international chapters, 8 corporate members and 16 collegiate chapters. International events were held in Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Switzerland, and Zambia. Drawing from the local communities including Girl Scouts, church groups, and outreach to schools, WAI estimates that over 9,700 girls participated in 2017 Girls in Aviation Day.
