Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ)
Moving the Region and Building 21st Century Infrastructure
World-class transportation infrastructure is essential to economic growth and vitality. At the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, we keep the region moving by air, land, rail, and sea so that the people and businesses of our region continue to thrive. With engineering in our DNA, we are shaping the region's future with groundbreaking yet practical facilities and systems built for the 21st century.
Founded in 1921, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey builds, operates, and maintains many of the country's most important transportation and trade infrastructure assets through air, land, rail, and sea.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was the nation’s first bistate agency. The governor of each state appoints six members of the agency’s Board of Commissioners, subject to state senate approval. Commissioners serve as public officials without pay for overlapping six-year terms. Integrity stands at the top of the Port Authority’s agenda, and we are committed to strong ethical standards.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a financially self-supporting public agency that relies almost entirely on revenues generated by facility users, tolls, fees, and rents. The Port Authority maximizes non-toll and non-fare revenues—which represent nearly two-thirds of the agency’s revenues—and leverages private sector investment in its facilities. We receive no tax revenue from NY, NJ, or NYC.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is strongly committed to the highest accountability and transparency standards. Our initiatives include posting an advance listing of action items being considered at the agency’s Board Meetings, webcasting all public meetings, reports on business transactions, and providing for public comment at the public Board Meetings.
