AVHS Career Day

After a two-year pandemic hiatus, Aviation High School restarted its annual Career Day on April 19. The mission of Aviation High School, located in Long Island City, is to provide students with a high-quality, rigorous academic and technical education that prepares them to meet the educational challenges of the 21st century, with a focus on careers within the aviation industry.

Career Day is a rewarding experience for students that provides them the opportunity to learn more about aviation-related career opportunities and explore strategies for success. Representatives from the many sectors of the aviation industry attended Career Day and spoke to the students about their various experiences working in the aviation field.

Aviation High School Alumni from JetBlue, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines spoke to the students about their careers as aviation technicians and their personal experiences after graduation. This group was a big hit based on the number of questions the students asked after the presentation.

Metropolitan Airport News Editor-in-Chief Julia Lauria-Blum, and Creative Director, Raymond Ringston teamed up and spoke with the students about the many opportunities within aviation that go beyond being a pilot or maintenance technician, including journalism and publishing.

While walking through the halls to our next presentation, we noticed a plaque hanging outside one of the classrooms. It was a dedication to Bill Puckhaber, the founder of Airport Press, honoring him for his contributions to the school and his work in building the JFK Airport Annex Facility. Metropolitan Airport News is proud to follow his lead and do our part in advocating for the aviation industry and airport community and promoting aviation as an excellent career choice for these young people.

The Aviation HS Teddy Bear Adoption display was on hand in the school library. In total, 20 teddy bears were adopted by alums and guests. The proceeds will help fund scholarships for high school seniors in temporary housing who do not qualify for other donor-sponsored scholarships.
