2024 ACGC Sponsors Metropolitan Airport News

Welcome to the August issue of the Metropolitan Airport News. With summer in full swing,  I enjoyed reading this issue about a day out on the NYC Ferry System. Our Non-Rev Travelers, Maureen, and Jonathan Katz took a break from jet-setting all over the world and took advantage of living in one of the greatest cities on the planet, New York City.  Riding the ferries is a wonderful way to get around the city on a hot summer day. It feels like a vacation for just $4.00 right in our own community. While I absolutely love to read about all…

Welcome to the July issue of Metropolitan Airport News. While we are in the midst of the peak travel season, dealing with the heat and storms causing delays across the country, it might be an excellent opportunity to enjoy all we have available locally. We certainly live and work in the right place if you are looking for a quick getaway out east to Long Island or any of the cultural options in NYC. However, if you are traveling to JFK Airport this summer, try the AirTrain instead of driving. The airport redevelopment is causing a lot of traffic, and…

(L.-R.): Katie Bliss and Julia Lauria-Blum touring the construction site at T6.

Welcome to the June issue of the Metropolitan Airport News. The airports are buzzing with the leadup to the summer travel season. The projections are outstanding, and TSA anticipates the busiest travel season on record this year. Be prepared and be patient as you work at the airports or travel through them over the next few months. Construction continues to be challenging due to diverted roadways and ever-changing traffic patterns. Consider the significant benefits of signing up with TSA Pre-Check; it can save you time and stress, especially during this busy season. Parking spaces are not readily available, so allow yourself more time;…

May is a wonderful month for celebrating many important dates, the most notable of which is Mother’s Day. I hope you take time to honor your Mom and those women who were special enough to play the role of Mom in your life. We talk an awful lot about work and careers here at Metropolitan Airport News, but being a mother is absolutely the best part of my life. Yes, it’s work, for sure, but the payment is the gift of love. What could be better? May is a month filled with significant dates that hold a special place in the aviation…

A view of the Administration Building & the International Arrivals Building at Idlewild Airport in May 1958, before the airport was renamed as John F. Kennedy International.

Welcome to the April 2023 edition of the Metropolitan Airport News. As we enter the Spring season and start shaking off winter for the renewal that is all around us in the form of flowers, leaves on trees, and longer days, this issue highlights where John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) comes from and how it continues to lead the world in innovation. We are delighted to have a walkthrough of what it was like to work at JFK, which started through the lens of Jerry Spampanato. Reading his vivid recollection of the airport when he started here, I felt…

March 2024 Publishers Message

In honor of Women’s History Month, we spoke with 14 local aviation and airport leaders and asked them about their contributions to the industry, which were related to important indicators like workforce, sustainability, personal journey to success, and role models. We chose these women based on their position, market expertise, and their standing in the community. Their responses are enthusiastic, informative, and highly optimistic. If there is one common theme, it is their love of this industry. The airport’s sense of community is a big part of its attraction as a workplace, and if you’ve been to a networking event…

British Airways Uniforms

The term “runway” takes on a different meaning this month; Julia Lauria-Blum looks at airline uniform fashion and how it has evolved since flight attendants first started giving pre-flight safety demonstrations. Airlines are known for the iconic uniforms worn by their flight crews, and Julia walks us down the runway, detailing uniform fashion trends from each decade. When you see a flight crew walking through the terminal with impeccable uniforms and rolling luggage, you can’t resist looking at them and wondering where they have been and where they are going next.  Julia was invited to moderate a lecture at The…

I hope you have enjoyed the holiday season and are ready for all the New Year has to offer. It is undoubtedly a time for reflection and renewal while we prepare to hit the ground running into 2024. In this issue, we turn our attention to an area of the airport with less traffic, no lines, fewer people, and a significantly much higher price tag: Fixed-base Operators, better known as FBOs. In the world of private aviation, the FBO provides high-net-worth travelers with a way to avoid all the waiting that the average traveler encounters. It is not a bad…

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and family. Life tends to get pretty hectic leading up to Thanksgiving, and it doesn’t slow until after New Year’s Eve for my family. It is also a very exciting and fulfilling time of year: parties to attend, gifts to buy, and airport community service projects ensuring that people in our area can enjoy the holidays regardless of their situations. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer your time to local organizations in your area, so see what you can do. Contact the JFK Rotary Club or the LGA Kiwanis…

Technology at Airports

Welcome to the November issue of the Metropolitan Airport News. Although we are officially in snow season at the airports, I am still enjoying all the beautiful Fall season has to offer. As I heard in a few meetings regarding the snow season, most airport stakeholders hope for a mild winter like last year; it’s rare to have a mild winter two years in a row, but you never know. No matter what Mother Nature gives us, everyone is prepared to deal with the worst while we hope for the best. I’m sure the topic of our feature this month,…
