Travelers at New York-area airports who refuse to don a mask will be subject to a $50 fine, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced.
The list of airports includes John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International. Travelers without masks on the airports’ AirTrains as well as on NJ Path commuter trains will also be subject to fines if not wearing face masks.
Up until now, the agency has relied on voluntary compliance.
“Since March, the agency has used public announcements, posters and digital signage, mask giveaways and education days, and one-on-one interaction to make travelers aware of the health and safety protocols established by the states of New York and New Jersey in response to the Covid-19 pandemic,” Port Authority officials said.
Last week LaGuardia Airport began to offer free coronavirus testing to anyone who wants a test, and JFK is expected to follow.
