New York Airports to Penalize Travelers Who Do Not Wear Masks

As incidents of non-mask wearing passengers increase both in airports and on aircraft, the PANYNJ has instituted a new rule whereby travelers who refuse to wear a mask will be fined.

NY Airport Mask Rule

Travelers at New York-area airports who refuse to don a mask will be subject to a $50 fine, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced.

The list of airports includes John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International.  Travelers without masks on the airports’ AirTrains as well as on NJ Path commuter trains will also be subject to fines if not wearing face masks.

Up until now, the agency has relied on voluntary compliance.

“Since March, the agency has used public announcements, posters and digital signage, mask giveaways and education days, and one-on-one interaction to make travelers aware of the health and safety protocols established by the states of New York and New Jersey in response to the Covid-19 pandemic,” Port Authority officials said.

Last week LaGuardia Airport began to offer free coronavirus testing to anyone who wants a test and JFK is expected to follow.
