Welcome to the September issue of the Metropolitan Airport News. This month’s issue brings us to Long Island and the Bayport Aerodrome; what an incredible place smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood! But it didn’t start that way, the airfield came first, and then the neighborhood came after.
The history of Long Island’s aviation roots is impressive. Thanks to the forethought of local aviators, the Bayport Aerodrome continues to tell the story of where we came from regarding our industry, which is still a substantial economic engine in the New York metropolitan area. A more recent and more solemn part of aviation, American, and world history is the 21st anniversary of the September 11th attacks. We continue to mourn the lives that perished in the aviation industry, PAPD, FDNY, and NYPD, as well as innocent civilians and those who continue to suffer due to related illnesses. Whether you reflect on this day during a moment of silence, engage in public service, or pray silently on your own, know that we stand solidly together in that vow to “never forget.”
As the kids return to school and those summer vacations end, look around for ways to engage our community. The Metropolitan Airport News events page within this issue will give you a glimpse into what’s happening around the airports; visit our website anytime for the most comprehensive and up-to-date event details.
