The “Run on the Runway” race, also known as the “JFK Runway Run,” has become one of the major fundraisers for the JFK Rotary Club. Funds raised from the race support scholarships; life‑saving heart surgeries for children from countries with limited access to specialized medical care and technology through Rotary’s Gift of Life Program; and annual holiday parties for children with disabilities from local schools (including Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf in Mill Neck, NY), held in the JetBlue hangar at JFK Airport. In 2017 more than 350 children attended. Sponsors have included JetBlue, HMSHost, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Poland Spring, and many others.
The JFK Rotary Club also sponsors an annual spring barbecue for students with learning disabilities at PS 213; launched a program in 1995 to provide Thanksgiving dinners for families in need in communities surrounding the airport; helps ship relief supplies to Rotary Clubs in distressed areas throughout the world; supported Hurricane Katrina survivors with clothing; and provided clothing and medical supplies to earthquake survivors in Pakistan.
