Welcome to the August issue of Metropolitan Airport News. Before I get into the current issue, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible feedback we received from last month’s Pan Am issue, Re-Tracing the Transatlantic. This article sparked a tremendous amount of nostalgia; the stories were plentiful, all recalling a wonderful era at our Queens airports, in which everyone worked together, socialized together, and really felt like a family. In some cases, they were families, generations of Pan Am employees.
It’s a true testament to how positive corporate culture can create something so special that thirty years later, people are still smiling when they share stories from those days.
Speaking about smiling, the Airport Community Foundation (ACF) held its 3rd annual ACF Golf Classic a few weeks ago. The joy on the course, whether at Middle Bay or Seawane, was evident in all who participated. It didn’t matter if you golfed, played pickleball, volunteered, or joined us after for dinner and networking; everyone was happy to be there and enjoyed a wonderful day supporting a great cause.
I was happy to have been part of it. Make sure to keep your eye out for the next ACF event; you won’t want to miss it. You can register online to receive updates at www.acfhelps.org.
In reading the feature article for the August issue, The Allure of New York City, I was pleasantly surprised to see that one of the things that I have planned to do during our ‘staycation’ was mentioned! I was born here in New York, lived here my entire life, and I’ve never been to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx!
This summer, I plan to spend a day at the Bronx Botanical Gardens, another place I’ve never been, and then end the day on Arthur Avenue.
We live in a place that many people around the world travel great distances to visit. Take a day to check off something from your own list of places to visit right here in our backyard. I’m very much looking forward to it.
Stay safe and cool out there, and do your best moving people and cargo all over the world!
Visit our website to register and explore the steady stream of current articles and information.
I hope you enjoy the issues, and I will see you around the airports!
