The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has named Edelana Van Marter, A.A.E., IAP, as Deputy General Manager for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Reporting to the Airport General Manager, Ms. Van Marter will be responsible for the management and strategic oversight of the airport. She began her new position on April 1, 2023. Ms. Van Marter brings 17 years of increasingly responsible experience in aviation and airport management. During a French state visit to China, Airbus signed new cooperation agreements with China Aviation industry partners. Witnessed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and French President Emmanuel Macron, Airbus CEO, Guillaume Faury signed with the Tianjin Free Trade Zone Investment Company Ltd., and Aviation Industry Corporation of China Ltd., an agreement to expand A320 Family final assembly capacity with a second line at its Tianjin site. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that it has entered into a Space Act agreement with the federal space agency to collaborate on initiatives to plan the next generation of flight within the complex airspace of the Port District. The evolution of flight technology, known within the technology industry as Urban Air Mobility or UAM, includes the use of drones and electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles to move cargo and passengers. IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG), announces it will restart services between London-Heathrow and Beijing and Shanghai after almost two years, as China reopens its borders to tourists. From 23rd April, IAG Cargo customers will be able to export and import vital goods on a daily rotation between London-Heathrow and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. In addition, services between London-Heathrow and Beijing Daxing Airport will resume on June 3rd, with four flights each week. SATS Ltd. (“SATS”) announced it had completed its acquisition of global air cargo logistics provider Worldwide Flight Services (“WFS”) for €1.3 billion (equivalent to approximately $1.4 billion) from an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management (“Cerberus”), representing an enterprise value of €2,250 million as previously announced. The acquisition received the overwhelming support of 96.8% approval from SATS’ voting shareholders in January this year and obtained regulatory approvals in all relevant jurisdictions in February. SWISS is to trial the use of artificial intelligence to conduct its passenger count during boarding on selected flights between April and June. The new approach should both enhance security and ease the workload of its cabin personnel. SWISS will be putting a top emphasis on data security and data protection in the new procedure and will ensure its full compliance with Europe’s and Switzerland’s strict data protection laws throughout the trial process.
