ATR moved a step closer this month to fulfilling an order from FedEx Express for its new turboprop freighter, which will operate on regional routes to smaller towns and cities. The aircraft manufacturer, a joint venture between Airbus and Leonardo based in Toulouse, France, said the ATR 72-600 production freighter successfully completed its first test flight on the island of Saint-Martin. During the two-hour flight, the crew performed tests to measure the aircraft’s operational limits with regard to speed and load factors, and other performance characteristics. U.S. military aircraft will play a major role in emergency distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine because there aren’t enough private-sector cargo jets to handle the surge of millions of doses that must be maintained at subfreezing temperatures, according to a logistics expert with close ties to the government. The Port Authority has been granted a patent for development of a cutting-edge system of protective beds located at the end of airport runways that add an important layer of safety to air travel, helping to decelerate aircraft and safely stop airplanes from overshooting runways. FedEx has launched a lightweight, sensor-based logistics device called SenseAware ID that enables the highly precise tracking of shipments. FedEx said that the launch of SenseAware ID is “well-timed”, as it continues to move pharma and medical supplies around the US.
